I think it's clear that on the set of hands where partner can't double 4♠, we would prefer to defend undoubled than doubled. Therefore, double is not a reasonable call. Is 4NT reasonable? Basically no, our suits are so bad that while we might have a good save, it is definitely not worth the risk, and I would expect to go for either 300 or 500 usually, with -800 and -100 happening sometimes (it's possible that we can make 5m, but it's pretty unlikely). If you wanna talk yourself into bidding, if opponents can be trusted to be reasonably sane, your side virtually has a 9-card fit guaranteed and low spade wastage (if any), making a 4NT bid or dbl attractive. PD will rarely do anything but pass the dbl and if he bids we may be set a couple tricks on hands where the opps can't make. Pass and hope that the opps go set on a bad (4-0 is possible) ♠ break or that we otherwise take 4 tricks. Doubling deserves catch to PD with a Yarb and to have aces sitting over our kings while we watch the opps rack up an OT. The odds of trying to penalize them here, noting our X is a huge fav to be passed, don't pay. We get an extra 50 for for the 1 trick set, but lose 170 when they make, and we're very unlikely to get a two trick set, unless PD has some cards but didn't bid over 1♠, in which case he might even venture an X himself after we pass(not likely but we aren't missing much by not trying to X this) Clear pass for me .. neilkaz .. Definitely there are downsides to doubling. The worst case is probably when we have 3 outside tricks, and partner's Qxx trump now gets picked up (ie pass would have led to +50, doubling leads to -590). But we have a void, which is very good for playing the hand if we have a big fit. I would pass. Partner is basically never going to pull this double, given that he couldn't bid over 1♠.Not sure that I agree with this. Partner will pull this double whenever he has some shape, his pass over 1♠ probably just denies a big diamond fit.
