How do you play this?

Bidding goes:

Pa Pa 1 1!

2 4 All Pass

I don't remember the Vulnerability but this was the bidding for sure. RHO is supposed to be a great player. Lead is Q.

How should you play the hand? Hint:

At the table I think I made a mistake which worked because RHO bid was not quite normal. In fact I played the hand as if the bidding had gone P-P-1-P-1-1-2-3-P-4-All Pass, but with an accepted lead out of turn.

So if I understand it correctly, South overcalled 1 and is declarer. This is not quite so easy.

Looking from the North hand, your losers are:

1, 3, 2

Two observations:

* If trumps are 2-2, you can safely ruff two .

* Finesse of K is probably not going to work.

Hope this helps you on the way.

The best way to play is probably cash the Ace and finesse on the way back if LHO follows!

I don't think this is easy at all.

If you assume that RHO has at least four hearts, and three or four clubs, here is a sensible line

Ace of hearts. Club to hand. Heart ruff. Club to hand. Heart ruff. Club ruff. Heart ruff. What happens next depends on what LHO does on this fourth round of hearts, if they are 5-3 (after a third in opening they might be 4-4). If LHO does something other than ruff with the 9 we ruff low (or over-ruff the queen with the king) and are down to

now we play the last club from dummy. If RHO is out of clubs we can ruff it and still have the AK of spades to come. If RHO follows we ruff with the ace and play a diamond, ducking LHO's card (unless it is lower than the 7 in which case we cover). The basic idea is that oppo have to cash 3 rounds of diamonds, and we want to control it so that RHO wins the last round, at which point he'll be endplayed.

If LHO ruffs the fourth heart with the 9 I haven't yet worked out if it's best to over-ruff or discard a diamond. Discarding a diamond looks the intuitive line. If LHO now returns a trump we run it to hand and play a diamond (again ensuring RHO wins the second round), and I don't think they can stop a second club ruff in hand. If they cash two diamonds and exit with a club I have to decide who started with the queen of spades, but at least I'll have a good idea of the count of the hand.

This line all looks a bit silly if RHO has opened in third seat on

and the ace of diamonds is right all along

Very nice but you forgot something I also forgot at the table, if LHO has 5 hearts and RHO 3, and RHO has 4 clubs while LHO 3 it is better to cash AK before ruffing the first heart, ain't it? So what I thought was, if RHO opens 1 play AK of clubs, if RHO opens 1 and raises partner hearts (so the lead comes from the other side of the table) then the proposed line (club to an honor, heart ruff, club to the other honor another heart ruff).

I am confused by your LHO and your RHO. RHO is the one who opened 1H, so I would expect him to have at least 4 of them. In particular, I did not want to cash both top clubs early, because I want them as entries for the heart ruffs.
