Something is fishy. Give opener 12 and responder 7 (minimums for their actions) together with my 14 makes 33 HCP, leaving only 7 points for partner. That's a pretty weak overcall, especially considering we have the Ace of his suit and responder has shown a stopper. Would he overcall 1 will something like xxx KJxxx xx Kxx? Maybe xx QJTxx xx Axxx? I guess it's possible everyone has their bids...barely.

I'll bid 2 and then take another call (2) if partner corrects to 2. I'll probably compete to 3 if the opponents compete to 3.

Should not dbl show the unbid suits?

That's how I have played it for years, and I am confident it is expert standard as well. Penalty is fairly useless since if you have a penalty double your partner probably has diddly for his overcall.

I prefer this treatment as well, but have not discussed it with any of my regular partners. So absent an agreement, I would stick with 2. However, I will make a note to discuss it with my regular partners. :)

Thanks guys. I bid 2 at the table, being unsure what double would mean. Partner was, as some speculated, on the light end of the overcall range, but we still made 4.

I wondered what double would mean, and I also wondered if I should make a forcing bid (I guessed that 2D would be NF).
