TimG
IMPs, vul v nv ♠A92 ♥J873 ♦J764 ♣K4 (Pass)-Pass-(3♥)-DBL(Pass)-??? Your call? On a scale of 0 (flip a coin) to 10 (this is automatic), how do you feel about your call?
vuroth
I'm sure 3♠ and 4♦ could both work. In IMPs, I guess I'll try 4♦. I think partner might be trying a direct 3♠ with 5 decent spades, and something tells me spades are not breaking well. I'm only about a 6 here, but then, I never bid at confidence 10. :P
hrothgar
This is another annoying one: For a change, the Moysian doesn't appeal to be. Too many ways this can go wrong, especially with the Spade tap in the wrong hand. I'm torn between 4♦ and Pass Pass is very unilateral. Given the dubious nature of third seat white versus red preempts, pass could work out brilliantly. However, it strikes me as too much of a gamble. Guess that I'll bid a pedestrian 4♦ I consider this a 6 or so (Please note: Vuroth and I both mark this a six, but our alternatives are completely different calls)
Codo
I would rate 3 NT a 7.Second choice is pass. (I mixed it up before I edited, but V, 3 NT must often be better then pass) I dislike 4 Diamond- does this hand looks like 5 in a minor? And I hate 3 Spade. mtvesuvius
Pass looks OK, but at these colors it seems to be a losing call. I'll try 3NT and a 6 for me. 3NT wins when partner is strong, and partner Xed opposite a known limited hand. If 4♦ was right, oh well. jdonn
I call pass an 8, 3NT a 7, 4♦ a 3, and 3♠ a 2.
matmat
I call pass an 8, 3NT a 7, 4♦ a 3, and 3♠ a 2. Nige?
jdonn
I call pass an 8, 3NT a 7, 4♦ a 3, and 3♠ a 2. Nige? He asked! Ok, I did go a little farther, but it wasn't Nigel stylez since I didn't give my top choice a 10.
mikestar
The partner with the shortness needs to be aggressive. Clearly the doubler is short so may well be minimum or a bit subminimum. I love pass. They aren't making, and +300 is fine when we have no game--which will be a substantial fraction of the time. Also on many of the hands where we do have a making game, there will be a chance for +800. I give pass a strong 8 at these colors--at any other colors, I would give it a least a 12 on a scale of 10. Fluffy
There are two viable options, and I rate my option (3NT) as 4 on the 0-10 scale for coin flip.
Hanoi5
3NT, Pass, 4♦, 3♠, in that order.
neilkaz
I am a passer here thinking it has the best risk vs reward with my flat hand and that 3♥x very rarely makes while we could easily be set in 3NT or some other contract. If we are making 3NT (my 2nd choice) we should soundly beat 3♥x.
P_Marlowe
3NT. Normal. With kind regardsMarlowe
TimG
The companion hand was ♠ KT875♥ --♦ A852♣ QT83 So, neither pass nor 3N would have been much of a success. What do you think of the takeout double with this hand?
jdonn
The companion hand was ♠ KT875♥ --♦ A852♣ QT83 So, neither pass nor 3N would have been much of a success. What do you think of the takeout double with this hand? Opposite a passed hand especially? No way. Partner passed and they made, what a shock. Partner bid 3NT and went down, what a shock. I won't double when partner's two most likely actions will usually work terribly.

What do you think of the takeout double with this hand? I have some sympathy for the double if partner wasn't a passed hand, but none in the actual case.
