I would pass. I think I would bid 5♥ if your style is to open 4♥ on a wide variety of strongish hands that most people would open 1♥ on.

At these colours I would hope to make 11 tricks and certainly not less than 10 tricks with a prime trump and a bullet.

 

It seems overly optimistic to hope for 2 tricks defensively with this hand unless we are counting some tricks in partner's hand.

 

Although I do expect partner to furnish enough defensive cards to defeat 5♣.

 

With very little more I think it would be clear to bid 5♥. With the actual hand I am inclined to bid - only if both contracts are failing am I making a big mistake. And if I make that mistake by bidding then I still might get a good score if the opponents make the same mistake and take a phantom favourable vulnerability dive in 6minor.

I just can't see setting 5♣, so I'm conceding -400 if I pass. 5♥ is going to be -500/-200/+850 I'd say 30-60-10, so my EV is -185, and this is if they double, and this is a big if. Feel free to disagree.

For me this is a pretty easy pass.

 

Perhaps it does partly depend on what you expect for partner's R/W 4♥, but I don't expect him to have 9 tricks in his own hand, and I don't expect to make 11 tricks in hearts.

I don't know how many tricks they make - 10, 11, 12?

So, because I don't expect to make, I pass and hope the preempt has done it's work.

 

I wonder if the tendency is to bid 5/5 more often on the forums than in real life, because, after all, the hand has been posted as a problem - why should the boring normal action be right?

Actually I think the opposite is true.

I think I would still open 4♥ at tese colors with just 8 hearts to AQJ10 and nothing else.

 

 

Can we defeat 5♣?, kinda unlikelly, RHO didn't double, this translates that we are not very likely to score a spade ruff from partner. since going for more than 500 sounds weird and we might sometimes make our game I like 5♥.

 

At MPs 5♥ is not the % action at all.

For me, this is a pass. Does PD have AQJTxxxx in ♥ and a likely useless honor ? Or does PD have a useful side honor ?

 

If PD has a useful side honor we could have 3 tricks on defence but still need to get some help from the ♠ suit to make 5♥. If PD has no help outside of ♥ we are going -500 too often for my tastes.
