mtvesuvius
My partner and I fought over this hand for a long time... Do you pre-empt it? V vs NV, at IMPs, RHO deals and passes. You hold: ♠ J53 ♥ AJ8752♦ Q5♣
hatchett
No. Bad suit, flat shape and in this position and at this vul I should have a better hand.
P_Marlowe
Even at equal vul. it would not meet our standards for a preempt in this position,I may bid it anyway, but we are red vs. green, and now I am way out on the other side of the border. With kind regardsMarlowe
mike777
I'll try using the oldfashion 2-3-4 rule here so only ok to open at fav vul.
paulg
Knowing the type of hands that you pre-empt with is something that any regular partnership needs to discuss - it sounds like you have started that process ;). As I've often written, there is a tendency for sounder pre-empts in North America than Europe and that can influence some of our responses. When considering a borderline call, it often helps to consider the positive and negative aspects of the hand. Naturally a pre-empt rarely has many positives, but for me this hand has too many negatives for 2nd in hand at unfavourable vulnerability:2nd in hand means that there is a 50-50 chance of pre-empting partnerThe suit is poor, even having the ♥10 would be a major improvementJxx in spades and an ace means that the hand is valuable if partner has spadessterile distribution - a 6-4 distribution would enhance the handAll this means that the upside of pre-empting is diminished in this position. Phil
Agree with Paul's comments. I doubt I'd even preempt this at equal.
jdonn
I generally accept there are varying styles. But anyone who preempts on this hand in this seat at this vul needs to go to a lesson about preempts.
Walddk
Nine losers, moth-eaten suit, 2nd seat vul against not: clear pass. Those who open 2♥ only remember the first part they were taught. 6 cards, 6-10 hcp. Don't forget to look at vulnerability, suit quality and position. andy_h
2nd seat vul? Not in a lifetime! Horrible suit and a flat shape.
neilkaz
Mediocre suit, vulnerable vs not at IMPs, 2nd seat :P Trivial pass
