Slightly off topic:

Could the software support an "agree" button along with "quote" and "reply"? I was thinking that there could then be a link that would say (e.g.) "7 concurrences" and when clicked it would reveal the IDs of the posters who clicked "agree". This would cut down on the number of replies to OPs but at the same time allow the people that like posting "agree" to be satisfied.

Also, I think the problem might be solved by making the 'adv/expert' forum an expert forum. There's a big difference between an advanced player and an expert player (as defined by what a typical person is likely to assess themselves as). Raise the bar of the existing forum instead of adding a new one.

Bridgewinners started out fairly 'pure' but has decomposed into a lot of random people posting stupid things.

BBF is better in the sense that you need to actually register as a BBO member, but just barely. I think we've done a reasonably good job policing the A/E domain, but you occasionally get ridiculous threads like the 6322 11 count with four controls.

Bridgewinners could stand to appoint some gatekeepers.

Bridgewinners could stand to appoint some gatekeepers

OK, I just had a silly idea...

Not sure if this would ever be viable, but I suspect that it might be fun.

What if we did the following:

Create a bridge master deal that serves as an entrance key to the advanced expert forum...

If you get the problem right on your first try, you're allowed to post replies.

If you you fail, you're locked out.

Rotate the "puzzle" each week.

Whoever provides the best post for a given week (measured via up-votes or whatever) gets to set the puzzle for the next week.

At one time, we had a forum for only people who had "gold stars" on the bbo gaming site. That forum quickly died for lack of posting... I will note, that you had to have a gold star even to SEE the forum.

I think we could create a "class" of players (not members, not advanced members...but a new one) that would be allowed to post in some such new forum. If we went that way, everyone would be able to read the post, but only the "selected" people could post.

The problem is figuring out who to include in the selected group. Richards idea of a single question entrance exam does not appeal to me. I would be more in favor of appointing a panel of, say, five, seven, or nine people to vote for people who want to apply to post in this hypothetical "expert only" forum. Majority of votes needed to be able to post. i am not saying this is going to happen, nor is my proposed selection protocol the best way... as I see some people will be voted in because of friendships, an others blackballed for other reasons. So more thought would be needed... but something like this is "workable" with the current software. If there was enough interest, and if we could figure out a fair way to select the people who could post in such a forum, this might happen.

Just to clarify, I was propsoing that each week players needed to "pass" the entrance exam

Some weeks you get to post, some week's you don't

Either way, i think that it would encourage people to spend a lot of time on at least one bridge problem each week...

As a non-expert who does not post in the Expert Forum except to call out my fellow I/A members who post silliness there, I think y'all simply should be more aggressive in chastising those who make such posts. Don't even answer such questions other than to say they're in the wrong forum. People will figure it out.
