Declarer leads a club, partner wins with the ace and plays the six of spades. What is the best continuation at matchpoints? Thanks in advance. Partner did not have the ten of hearts, so declarer got a ninth winner, which rectified the count for a minor suit squeeze on partner. Is it too risky to play for the uppercut at matchpoints? Vilgan
[hv=d=n&v=n&n=s632h54da762cat62&w=sa75hakt62dj85c87&e=st98hq93dk94ckq53&s=skqj4hj87dqt3cj94]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv] At the table, I continued with the spades. Partner did not have the ten of hearts, so declarer got a ninth winner, which rectified the count for a minor suit squeeze on partner. Is it too risky to play for the uppercut at matchpoints? A few things here: You should win partner's spade continuation with the K of spades and then follow with the Q of spades. Tell your partner you have something in diamonds. It doesn't help on this hand, but its a good thing to at least be aware of. Just saying ♠ and a ♠ leaves out a lot of information you can communicate to partner. Continuing with a 4th spade is risky. The most obvious risk is that declarer is 3523 and your diamond trick just went away. Even if declarer is 3532, bad things can still happen as you saw when partner was squeezed out of one of his minor suit guards. Personally, I'd have just exited a diamond. Its the one suit (outside of trumps) where we might still take a trick. It certainly doesn't give away anything, and leaves declarer to solve trumps (if there is any solving to be done) on his own. Hanoi5
Partner could have played ♦A before the spades. He should know they're not going down unless I have a trick in hearts apart from the spades.
