Vatican endorses Evolution!

Random news link I found on google news. Not sure how reliable this is.

Go at it  :D

In my experience, catholics generally have not been anti-evolutionists. This quote expresses what I understand to be the prevailing contemporary view:

Marc Leclerc, a natural philosopher at the University went further, saying Creationists were mistaken in arguing that that Darwinism was "totally incompatible with a religious vision of reality".

Religions change slowly over time. Modern catholic bishops (so far as I have seen) have been consistent in some things such as being against capital punishment and war in addition to abortion.

Oops. I see I should not have added to this thread.

I've been a Catholic my whole life and have never heard a priest advocate creationism or the like. In fact I can distinctly remember two homilies wherein our pastor discussed how science (specifically evolution) and the Bible can coexist, calling the story of Creation an allegory for evolution, etc.. This is, in fact, really old news for Catholics.

I know there are always exceptions to the rule but I think the Catholic church has a good history of scientific advancement, most notably among Jesuits. An instance like that of Galileo is often blown out of proportion. It wasn't just his heliocentric view that led to excommunication and imprisonment but some very directed jabs at the sitting pope in a book he wrote on the subject.

Anyway. The 'random news' is reliable... but I would hardly call it news.

As far as condom use goes, to the Church that's a moral issue. While I don't exactly stand with the Church on many many moral issues I've never been disappointed with them for being naive about science or something of the like. It is a stigma that is very much undeserved, imo. When talking about other Christians though.... on this subject it seems often deserved. Although I can't claim to know the views of any particual sect. My perception is that most loonies probably don't know their own Dogma and are just random Bible thumpers acting somewhat 'rogue.'

By the way you can probably tell by the relative tones but the author and I aren't related.

Wrong thread. This needs to be posted in several of the other longer message topics...

Sorry, I don't have either the time or the inclination to do it.

This was just meant as a FYI and not a thread expecting discussion. Maybe I should have mentioned that. (btw, "Go at it" was misleading, but was meant as a joke meaning "Please don't".)

Besides, you are free to ignore whatever threads you want. I understand concerns about thread bloat about the same topics, but there is also an issue of bringing dead threads back to life.

Anyway, lock/delete this thread if you guys want. I don't care.

From an article on the same subject>

Organisers of a papal-backed conference next month marking the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species said that at first it had even been proposed to ban Intelligent Design from the event, as “poor theology and poor science”. Intelligent Design would be discussed at the fringes of the conference at the Pontifical Gregorian University, but merely as a “cultural phenomenon”, rather than a scientific or theological issue, organisers said.

  • 4 weeks later...

"Darwin's Dangerous Idea" An impressive hour long programme of 3 Andrew Marr explores how Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection has taken on a life of its own far beyond the world of science.

46 mins in: Pope Pius 12, in his 1950 encyclical accepted evolution in that the human body takes its origin from pre-existent living matter, but declared that the spiritual soul is immediately created by God. Thus he drew a firm line in the sand in effect saying to scientists "Have the body, but leave the soul to us"

An instance like that of Galileo is often blown out of proportion. It wasn't just his heliocentric view that led to excommunication and imprisonment but some very directed jabs at the sitting pope in a book he wrote on the subject.

That came later. By then, I think Galileo was already disillusioned, when a change in the papal office brought a huge change in policy.

what's next? Approval of condom use in family planning?

That would be an essential step, in fact more important than accepting accepted science. The policy to not allow condoms combined with all kinds of misconceptions about AIDS are one major contributor to the misery in sub-Saharan Africa.

This is my biggest problem with the Catholic church as this causes a lot of misery.
