 -     -     Pass  Pass

 Pass  1    Pass  1

 Pass  2    Pass  ?

I’d like to open this but don’t have the gizmo’s to bid it so I make a routine pass.

Partner opens 1:1 2:?

Looking for a fit, is 2 enough?

I assume 2 4sf can’t be made by a passed hand, partner has denied so what would 2 here show? 5+4 and an invitational hand, too good for 2, forcing 1 round? Or am I dreaming :P

If 1-P-2 is a weak jump shift, then 1-P-1-P-2-P-2 shows a hand that is better than a weak jump shift. If the WJS shows maybe 4-7, then 2 here would show about 8-10, which is what you have. This is a particularly good example of why WJS's work. Not for preemption, but for description.

Personally, I use IJS's, where the immediate JS shows this hand, and 1...2 shows about 4-7. The principle is the same, though.

2 is was...making 6  :)

Aw come on, don't we get to see partner's hand so we can tell you it was either partner's fault or the defense could have held you to 3? :)

It was an indy so the bidding is largely irrelevant, my p should have raised ’s and we would have been in game. The play? I played like Zia of course.

Agree. 2 over 2 is never 'broke' playing WJS.

I don't like the answers here, though they're in agreement so I assume it's the Standard answer.

I wouldn't WJS with 4-6 in the majors, even if this hand was weak enough to WJS. I was unaware that was non-standard. Aren't those of you who would worried about being in a 6-1 heart fit when there was a 4-4 spade fit available? If you're not going to worry about a spade fit, why not just open this hand with a weak 2?

Rest deleted- I've been talked out of it.

Well, that's a fair concern. But then at least Opener knows that your 2 rebid either shows 8-10 HCP or six hearts and four spades, and hence playing strength, I suppose.

All that said, a one-bid 6-4 should probably be handled as a one-suiter, for practical reasons and for this problem.
