Mbodell
Here was a hand from district GNT A that some good players got wrong. See if B/I can do better: [hv=d=n&v=n&n=sq32hat32dkt53ckj&s=sahqj64daq742ca32]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Opening lead is ♦J from W against 6♥ from the south. Your plan? quiddity
I'll try: Win the opening lead, HA, HT. If hearts are 4-1 and the king is held up, I'll try to ruff a club before drawing a third round. This looks better than HA, HQ, in which case if West wins and returns a spade I don't have transportation to ruff a club and return to draw the last trump. quiddity
LOL! If hearts are 4-1, I can't draw a third round of trumps after ruffing a club because West will win the round and force me with another club. Is there anything better than taking the same line and relying on the club finesse if hearts are 4-1?
Mbodell
Quiddity had the only main part I was trying to make of the safety play which was necessary on this hand. West had stiff J♦ and two small hearts. East had ♥Kxx. If you finesse in hearts you get the diamond ruff. If you play ace and another East wins the king but can't give the ruff. It wasn't overly hard, it is just a good example that if someone says how should you play ATxx opposite QJxx, that what your goals are matters. Not giving a ruff was a pretty important goal here. (I'm not actually 100% sure that this is what happened at the other table for -1, it is just it was the only thing I could think of as the club Q is onside and the trumps are 3-2).
