gwnn
no, if you bid ♠ and then ♦ you give the right impression that you have 4♠ and 5-6 ♦, because with 5 spades you'd insist on spades, knowing that you have a fit there (i.e. partner should "never" double on a doubleton major). now that you started with 1♦ it is quite impossible to do anything. This situation is more or less exactly why you should always bid your major first. Only with a 7-4 should you think about hiding your major. Also if you have 4-4 in the majors, it is a good idea to bid ♠ first and then ♥ to let partner give preference at a comfortable level. kenrexford
Neither 1♠ nor 1♦ looks right. Staring down the unexpected club stiff, with two Aces, a Jack kicker, and 5-4 in two suits that are probably supported, and a lot of body (A9 OK, A109 great), I'd cuebid 2♣, myself. helene_t
You have to bid spades as gwnn explains, but this hand is much too strong for 1♠. Either 2♠ or 2♣.
jdonn
Of course 1♦ wasn't right but we are kind of lucky it went this way. Balancing 3♠ seems like a fair description at this point.

I agree. I would have started with 2♠, but whatever...
