I dont see any problem with this hand. You are in a good contract so any plus score or even -100 should be ok. You should not need to worry about overtricks. You have 3 losers, maybe 4 losers, so should play naturally. Win Club Ace and exit with a club, intending to ruff Clubs in Dummy, oppo will probably try to draw trumps, but you still survive because they can probably make a Spade partscore. (or am I missing something?)

If you duck the lead, then they draw dummy's trumps (they might be 3-1)

Whats wrong with ducking the club?

It's hard for me to think of a layout where it makes a difference. I just want to collect my 3 tricks and set up club ruffs.

You noticed its MPs didn't you?

Your point?

+110 will be an excellent score at MP.

I can't believe I'm the only one that can see this, which makes me think that maybe I'm missing something.

If we duck the club, the defense can either play A, , however, we retain maximum entries to our hand to try to do something with the hearts. If the defense plays a non trump, we now have some timing to try to ruff two clubs in hand.

I do realize that the 8 may come into play in some layouts, but if it doesn't we are a lock for +130. Furthermore, it doesn't seem to diminish our chances of nine tricks.

Isn't that better than lazily taking +110?

I can understand the point that by ducking you will be more likely to induce a defensive error, which would be a lot more worthwhile at MPs than it would be at IMPs. I can say that I didn't give it more than a cursory thought when I answered the question. I guess I'm just used to playing IMPs. Maybe your point would be even clearer if the form of scoring was BAM. Of course the same applies to MPs in this case.

Obviously at IMPs, we would rather have the 1 IMP than not, but it's certainly not something we would lose any sleep over.

It makes no difference whether it is Imp or MP, overtricks simply do not matter in this situation

Playing matchpoints, your sole objective is to make as many tricks as possible but only if you can see that you are in the same contract as the rest of the field. If you are in an unusual contract then you should always play safe.

It would be easy to construct a hand where your oppo are making 3 and this is likely to be the par contract. Making 3 already beats par, so overtricks are meaningless. You cannot score more than 100% on this hand.

If the red suits misbehave and oppo defend unerringly, you could end up with 8 tricks, so why risk an excellent score for an overtrick?

Why was this posted in Beginner and Intermediate Discussion, if your intent was to provoke an advanced discussion about pointless overtricks?

Tony

ps. I am almost certain that the original post showed Imp scoring - maybe I was wrong but it makes no difference

Playing in a club game you somehow buy it for 3

Maybe the moral here should be "dont push your luck"?

Tony :D

p.s What actually happened at the table? and what score did you receive?

I think that we were all looking for the banana skin. hehe

I like the duck at trick 1 Phil, it keeps you in control. If the oppponents continue clubs you are ahead in tempo. If they don't then you can switch and go after hearts. The hand is not easy but the basic technique is very important, good hand for the B/I forum.

At my club you can rarely guess where the rest of the room plays the board. Making an overtrick on this hand can still make quite a difference in score.
