Can you avoid 3NT here?

I had a partner who always passed hands like north's--balanced, no fit, and reasonable defense.

I never really became convinced, but it works out fine here, and over the times I played with him, it might have generated more IMPs than lost (and on a hand where East is a solid citizen!). Thoughts?

I had a partner like that too, which I told him I didn't like but I would try it. Every time he did it it worked, every time I did it it didn't work. So we were both right.

If you're going to play in game, do you actually want to reach four of a major? OK, I can see that on the actual layout 3NT is going to go three down, but I don't think I'd make 4H or 4S either - in either case I'd end up losing to 10 at the wrong moment.

In 3NT I expect to make if both major suit kings are onside - West's hand will be mangled by having to discard twice on diamonds - whereas bad breaks may still scupper four of a major. When someone's preempted, I tend to avoid 7-card fits.
