Have you been counting?

I'm sorry, I have a partner who doesn't lead his singleton against a slam in the suit I pre-empted?

Anyway, it looks as if declarer has

Axxx

Kx

x

AQJxxx

(if he has a 7th club and not the HK it's just off whatever we do)

If we make the obvious play of discarding a spade (or a heart), declarer is also going to discard a spade. Partner wins and returns a heart (say), declarer wins in hand and runs trumps, making via a double squeeze.

Thus we have to ruff this trick. Declarer can't discard or we can cash a spade.

I assume he's now off, as he can't rectify the count, although it feels like one of those hands where you might have been able to make double dummy anyway.

lol Frances you analyze hands better than almost anyone... I'm just curious but like how long did it take you to figure that out? I always imagine you just insta figuring it out lol. Do you think you would find this play at the table (I mean I guess it's not hard but I just imagine myself insta pitching a spade happily since it doesn't seem like a very important moment.)

I wish I could get all of these right at the table, I'd just be a bridge goddess then.

Absolutely agree.

So I'm wondering here, we have 3 expert+ players agreeing that it is quite conceivable they wouldn't have found the defence, why then is Kelsey's book labeled 'intermediate' ? What is an expert defence book like then?

Because it's definitely solvable if you think about it, which you will when its given in problem form. It is not that hard from that point of view, but the problem for me at least is I would probably not think deeply about this play because no warning bells are going off at all.
