Hi all,

This is my 1st post, so I guess it goes here.

I've been playing on the Windows BBO for about a year and am having no problems with it.

Of course I don't know all the goodies but I get by. It's another story on the Ubuntu site.

So far I have tried to log into a table that needs a player on the "WP" and have been unsuccessful.

I have tried all tables and refresh. I have asked numerous questions of a person by the name of Desi

and some of them helped but I am still having problems. Is the Ubuntu BBO In a beta state?

Most likely it is my fault.

Are you running the BBO Client under WINE, or using the new BBO flash client when you're booted into Ubunutu?

If the latter, I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 with Firefox and I'm able to get to tables in the WP club without a hitch.

If you can clarify, I'm happy to offer whatever (limited) help I can.

Yup. Using the downloadable client, I've been playing in ubuntu under wine for quite a while. Haven't tried the browser based game under ubuntu, though.

If you're trying browser-based, all I can say is that I've had a few java issues on ubuntu.

Anyways, there's a wine thread around here somewhere.

Java issues should not come into play.

The web-client uses is based on Flash, not Java.

Thanks everyone for replying.

I have no idea if I have the FLASH version or not.

The problem as I see it in the WP is that the tables all show full and clicking on "Show Tables"

and "Refresh" does nothing to change that. If I would click on a player how would I know if the table is full or not. You all must be looking at something different from what I'm getting.

if you access bbo like this:

www.bridgebase.com

click on "Click here to play bridge"

you are using the web version of bbo.

The rest of this assumes you are using the web version of BBO.

If you launch BBO in some other way, tell me what that is.

To get to WP refugees:

(click on) Show all tables

(click on) All public and private clubs

(click on) The WP refugees bridge club

You'll see a list of tables.

Along the top of the table list are a few buttons

"Start table", "Refresh", "Open Tables", "Full Tables", "Friends".

if you push "Open tables" you will see any tables that are not full ( if any exist)

if you push "Full tables" you will see any tables that are full ( if any exist)

if you push Friends, you will see any tables containing a friend (of yours) in N,S,E, or W.

Thanks for the help.

I'm logged in as "counter13"

Ok , I've been pushing "full Tables" and "refresh"

I seem to remember trying "open tables without success

but I am not certain. Will try that again.

The rest of the stuff I am doing.

I'll report back if the "open tables doesn't solve the problem.

I don't know how to say this but it is intended to be constructive.

Maybe it's my lack of detailed knowledge of the Ubuntu BBO site but I find it abominable.

In comparing it to the Windows BBO site I didn't know if i was playing Rubber bridge,

IMPs or MPs . Couldn't see a way to find out how others did with the same hand.

Couldn't move the chat area so that I could see more than one message.

Program is slow.

On the Windows site in WP people are constantly leaving, not so on the Ubuntu WP

using "open Tables". Very little movement and not many partially empty tables.

For people who want to get away from the Windows mess this is very discouraging.

I understand that all of this is free and for that I thank you but some programmer needs

to take some pointers from the Windows site and improve the Ubuntu site IMHO.

First of all, there's no such thing as "Ubuntu BBO". There's BBO Win, which is a standalone emulator that runs on Windows (or emulators like WINE), and there's BBO Flash, which runs on any operating system with a web browser and the Adobe Flash plug-in, i.e. which is essentially any system you're likely to use these days. If you get into BBO in your web browser, you're using BBO Flash.

To answer your questions:

You can tell the form of scoring from the diagram at the top left, which contains the board number. Above the board number it will say IMPs, Matchpoints, etc. to indicate the type of scoring.

To see how others did, click on My Results at the top right, then click on the Other Tables tab.

You can drag the dividing lines between any of the sections of the display to change the layout. To see more lines of chat, drag the line between the playing area and the chat area up.

BBO Flash doesn't update the table listing automatically, you have to click the Refresh button. Keeping it updated constantly puts too much load on the server, I think. That's why they didn't copy this feature of the Windows client.

The same programmer who wrote BBO Win also wrote BBO Flash, so I think he knows all his pointers. Some of the differences were deliberate choices, to solve problems that the Windows client had. Some differences are due to limitations of Flash; for instance, it doesn't allow applications to read or write files on the user's PC, for security reasons. In other cases, he simply hasn't finished implementing everything -- BBO Flash is only about a year old, BBO Win has been around for over a decade.

Thank you Barmar for a very informative reply.

I am going to take a screen shot of your message and try to follow your instructions

for my various problems. If it's a work in progress I can understand the difficulties.

In general I am pleased with the Windows BBO. There I would like to see the Profiles

made more like the ACBL convention card. It's hard to get enough detail in your profile

the way it is now.
