minor bug? in web viewgraph, known?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I see a small bug perhaps in the viewgraph online application. I wonder if it's known.

When I log into the BBO online app, then log out, then log into viewgraph:

http://www.bridgebase.com/client/vugraph.php

while there are no vugraphs in session (or perhaps even when there are), I see initially the Who's Online and My Results buttons are overlapping the My Table and Other Table buttons.

When I resize my window, the Who's Online and My Results buttons disappear.

There are some times, rarely, when I do not see those buttons right after I reload, but I'd say a good 90% of the time I do see them (until I resize).

Thanks!

Tom

Thanks for the bug report, Tom.

So far I have not been able to replicate this condition, but perhaps I am not doing the right thing. If possible can you send a screen capture of the unusual state you describe to me by e-mail (fred@bridgebase.com)? If you don't know how to create a screen cpature, let me know and I will provide instructions.

Also, can you please describe how you move from one version to the other? Do you have 2 browser windows open? Or do you have one browser window and use the forward and back buttons to move betweeen the pages?

Hi Fred, Uday,

I've done some digging and I can now always reproduce the problem. I don't think it has anything to do with logging on to BBO.

A screengrab of the offending buttons:

http://xs.to/xs.php?h=xs136&d=09063&f=bbo_vg_buttons573.png

My Environment:

Firefox: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009011913 Firefox/3.0.6

- Note that I did this yesterday on the previous version with the same result

Adobe flash player 10

Repro steps:

In firefox I load: http://www.bridgebase.com/client/vugraph.php

- loads fine

I then resize the right container using the vertical separator to be about 75% of its original size. The right container holds the results table and the table image.

I then reload the page.

On reload, I see that

- The container is now back to its original size

- The buttons as shown in the image above are there

The buttons disappear when I force a refresh such as resizing the right container or doing some other things.

I was not able to reproduce this on IE(8) or Safari. I'm not sure if their flash plugins is different, or perhaps they are executing the refresh code that hides the buttons, while firefox doesn't execute it.

The vertical dimension of the browser window doesn't seem to matter.

Originally I though it was linked to the logging in to BBO, since I didn't see why the Who's online and My Results buttons would exist in Vugraph, but now I think they are in your Viewgraph app itself. Which leads me to wonder if this is even the right viewgraph app, I may have found it via google, so perhaps it's an old version?

To answer your question of what did I mean by logging in, I would log in to BBO in one tab, and then open that viewgraph page in another. Always in firefox as described above.

Clearing the flash cache (setting local storage to 0, I think should do that) did not have any impact, the behavior persists.

The buttons are not able to get my mouse clicks, clicking them just passes the click down to the tabs below, and the tabs below have a highlight effect while the buttons themselves do not change at all.

If you'd like me to assist in helping you reproduce the problem, or have any other questions, please let me know.

Many thanks,

Tom

Thanks Tom!

At this point in time you are the easy leader in the Best Bug Report of 2009 Contest :)

I was able to replicate the bug under Firefox. It will be fixed in the next version.

O boy, a challenge!

In case this wasn't obvious...

The bug itself was nothing special, but the bug report was GREAT!

You happen to be an excellent bug-reporter already, Barry, and I won't take much improvement for you to achieve the standard that Tom has set :)

It probably helps that I've spent much of my career in various engineering and tech support roles, i.e. as the recipient and processor of bug reports. So I know what I like to receive, and try to provide that when I submit bugs.

I agree, my career would be infinitely easier if all problem reports I received were as detailed and complete as tomeliaz's. In my current job I don't get reports directly from end users, but from other groups in the company (customer care, network operators, sales engineers, and consultants), yet they frequently leave out some of the most basic details that I need to investigate.
