andy_h
Partner is West, and is dealer who opens 1♣ (can be short, playing 2/1) You hold:[hv=d=w&v=e&s=s653hkj942dak3c85]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] But before you bid, your RHO butts in with 3♦. Which option do you take?a ) 3♥b ) 3NTc ) X If you bid 3♥, do you think 3♠ by partner is like 3NT-probing?
helene_t
I would bid 3NT. I think 3♠ over 3♥ would show four spades and therefore the only way to make sure we don't bypass 3NT is to bid it now.
jdonn
I bid 3♥, my diamond length makes me think partner is likely to have either heart support or four spades anyway. Switch my majors and I like 3NT since bidding 3♠ would make me more likely to bypass it.
mtvesuvius
I agree with Josh... 3♠ is certainly 3NT probing imo.
Fluffy
I would double because I think it is very unlkelly this will get us over 3NT. But now I read josh's logic it looks better.
cnszsun
With hearts and 4 spades, wouldn't we have bid double rather than 3♥? So, 3♠ by partner may not promise 4 cards, imo.
rogerclee
3♥, no need to be a genius here.
Hanoi5
3♥. Double. 3NT. In that order of preference.
Codo
3 NT, but just because we are simple souls and have no gadget like 3 Spade asking for a stopper. Playing with a tricky BBF member, 3 HEart stands out a mile. I would never double, because a 3 Spade rebid from partner would be nonforcing, so he may jump to 4 with a good hand and 4 Spades. That I agree with. Why would someone take that risk? So they can bid 3NT over 3♠? But if partner is bidding 3♠ after a double, he is also bidding it after a 3♥ bid. Codo
I agree Josh, why should someone double? But at least Hanoi5 did prefer X to 3 NT and Fluffy, a much better player then me, even doubled instead of 3 ♥.So I tried to write down, why I disagree with them. Fluffy
Martens teaches to play double GF in this sequence. The logic is that partner will bid 3NT with any positional stopper anyway so you are almost forcing to game by doubling. You solve more than you lose for staying in partscore. InTime
According to our partnership understanding 3♥ is forcing. IMO, partners 3♠ rebid does not have to be 4 spades and is a NT probe. Partner is forced to bid and this is the best bid to make without tolerance for hearts. To bid 4♣ is ruling out 3NT.Regards
