TylerE
1♠, as I always do on these hands.
mtvesuvius
1♠ wtp?
Hanoi5
I think we can make it this time... I'd bid 1♣ if diamonds were the other suit.
TylerE
If it was both minors, it's even more clear to open the higher suit.
MarkDean
Sweet, I am the first 1♣ voter. I have opened both ways when 55 in the blacks, depending on my hand. I have had a mental image of Steve Robinson shaking his head in disappointment, but other than that, nothing bad has happened when I opened 1♣. Fluffy
I might open 1♣ if I had 6 clubs this time, but I am not enterilly sure, in third position I'd open 1♠ even with 6th club.
jdeegan
 1♠ just to find out right away if we have a playable spade fit. System mavens take umberage with my thinking on 5-5 black hands, but I have found a practical method that works, esp. at MP's. 1. With a good playing hand and weak to moderate high card strength, open 1♣ and then keep bidding ♠ at the minimum level. QJ986A47AJ1084 2. With a strong hand, say 17+ working HCP, open 1♠ and plan to make a high reverse in ♣. AQJ96A47AQ1087 3. With a weak hand that lacks playing strength, open 1♠ and essentially give up on the clubs. Phil
Probably 1♠. A 5-3 spade fit is just too likely to pass up. Up until several years ago I routinely opened 1♣ on hands like this.
