Just for fun !

This is a classic scissors coup hand.

Obviously, you believe the switch was to a singleton club, and you want to prevent the opponents from getting their ruff.

So you win the club and play K, A, and another heart. When LHO does not cover the 10, you pitch a diamond from dummy, cutting off the communications between the two hands.

From the title to the thread, I can only guess that this is the only way to go down on the hand. That can only be because there is no club ruff but the opps can get a second round heart ruff.

Brilliant.. East is a devious mastermind. Some of these stories are about what might have happened, rather than what did happen... if rho found this defence in real life, he or she deserves a prize for a fantastic defence

Interestingly, this same theme is presented, from the defender's point of view, in this month's Swiss Match in the Bridge World. See Board 3, February 2009. It's on page 16 :)

You lead the Diamond A and partner encourages.[/hv]

Chip, who showed me the BW hand after I'd shown him the amusing one here, had refused to play the hand I gave him, saying he'd need to know the auction and who RHO was. The auction because it would be relevant whether RHO could know that his partner had no tricks. Who RHO was, to know whether RHO might lead a club from three small to try to develop a trick out of thin air.
