Hand Where I Had No Idea What to Do #2

Would you have passed in third seat?

I think you mean in 1st or 2nd seat.

1) I would have passed.

2) I would not fit jump, as the FJ suit is poor (making it harder for partner to judge)

3) I would have bid 4 over 3. Takes up a lot of room, but only way for partner to know that our hand is good.

4D doesn't confirm that you had 3 hearts to begin with and is suggesting diamonds as a possible strain.

I often get mixed up in situations like this - I would have assumed that pulling 3nt after giving a preference would tend to be a cuebid in support of the preferenced suit. What would you expect for a 4D bid - 2-3 in the reds catering for a possible 5-5 in opener's hand? And how would you bid a more balanced hand with a better holding in diamonds and nothing outside - say JT9xxx ATx KQ xx?

Thanks for the replies.

On the actual hand, it does not really matter, as 5 is safe, and partner will put the brakes on even if you make two moves.

At the table, I bid 4, which partner, probably correctly, took as a suggestion of strain. He bid a slow 4, which I passed.

For the 4 bidders, what are you doing over 4?
