ArtK78
Insanity? Not necessarily. Poor short term memory? Absolutely. Partner is a passed hand. The double of 1♠ is fine - you want partner to know that you have spades, just in case RHO is psyching his 1♠ bid. As for the double of 2NT, that is just poor short term memory. If it were not for partner's initial pass, the double would be fine. Since partner is a passed hand, just pass and hope to beat 2NT. (By the way, what was partner's 2♣ bid? That doesn't make much sense in this auction.)
rogerclee
Don't like either double at all.
vuroth
Ok, if double isn't right the first time, I really don't know what to bid. I considered 1NT, but I really don't want to have to explain to partner how I felt my heart queen was a stopper in that position. Second double, I just didn't believe they were making. My only concern was clubs blocking, but I felt like hearts would be their only source of tricks. Turns out partner had 9 points and the minor suits covered. My heart queen was finesseable for 5 tricks, partner did not have a spade honour, and dummy had something like QJ9x in diamonds and declarer had Jxxx in clubs, so we couldn't run anything. In retrospect, given the flaws of my hand, I think pass is probably superior than the second double, but I really, really did think that my opponents were way over their heads. It wasn't so much short term memory loss as much as, in the case of the 50 point deck, I prefer to believe partner and disbelieve opponents. P_Marlowe
Hi, #1 it is a matter of partnership agreement, what your first double should mean, some would play it as responsive (it seems your partner took it that way) other as showing spades (you) If the auction would go (1H) - X - (1S) - (X) ... The consense would be, that the last X showed spades, and I would treat your first double similar, just for memories sake, I have very limited memory capacity, and I cant go to a store to buy additional one. #2 Playing MP, the 2nd double is agressive, but not unreasonable, even if partner is a passed hand, he wont be broke, i.e. most likely the points are evenly distributed, so you will have a fair chance of beating it. Most likely you should only make the 2nd double, if you need tops. With kind regardsMarlowe
ggwhiz
The second double is a swing action that is acceptable at MP's with red opps but it IS a swing action. I've seen a dozen posters here in similar situations say they would pass with opps white but double for the 200 if red. The problem is that the opps knew they were red before they bid 2nt and I don't make that second double nearly as often as I used to. brianshark
Your pard probably bid 2♣ because he thought your first double showed the other 2 suits (a common misconception). Your pard has at most 11 points and possibly less, and the opps are known to have a combined 22 count at least. Nothing about the auction has, to me, suggested that the hand will play any worse for declarer than the combined point cound indicates (indeed the onside heart Q indicates the opposite) so the 2nd double is poor, even red at match-points.
