(1)-2-(4)-5

(5)-6-(6)-?[/hv]

Bad opponents, expert partner.

Your choice?

Edit: 6 instead of 5???!

What if you were 2-2 in the blacks?

Early in the morning, and I am thinkng and thinking and thinking, and come to no conclusion.

At this vulnerability, partner is more likelly to bid 6 to defend than to make, this makes it less likelly that he has A and A, even with this cards our troubles ain't over yet.

Chaces of opponents making this contract are slim, partner is maked with spade values of he doesn't have A.

I think I will double hating it.

To be fair I posted this problem with the question in mind 'do you sac?'

If we're beating this, do you think double is necessary? I'm wondering what the MP +/- from the double could possibly look like.

This is probably already a top or bottom situation, depending on the field. I think that X for the extra 100 or so won't make a difference, but nor will -1660. So, I double because I'm pretty sure we can beat this, and my scorecard loks better with +200, instead of +100 B).

I think this queston also depends a lot about how sounds overcaller your partner is.

If holding like xx xxx Axx KQJxx is routine overcall for your partner I would suspect 6!H is easy make. But if partner is sound overcaller I would just take my sure plus and double for fair MP result. (This seems like hand where many might bid over in both directions and I hope 7 isn't on for our side)

If partner may easily have the first hand type I will pass and let partner decide what he wants to do with his junk overcall B)

As both 3 and 4 would be splinters in support of on this sequece, it sounds like the actual 4 bid means void.

If this is correct (I'd ask the opps to be sure), then I'm bidding the grand; it may well make plus you only live once.

On a lesser distribution (as OP suggested) or uncertainty about opps' 4, I hit 6.

I'd bid.

Hands like xx x Axxx Axxxxx (and this isn't an overcall) give us our grand and we are just nicking 6 a trick.

Something like xx x Axxx KQxxxx (many wouldn't overcall (I might)) and we are -1/-2 depending on the lead, but pard's A lead could easily let in 6.

  • With the actual hand, IMO, _P = 10, _X = 8, 7 = 5.
  • With 2-2 in the blacks, I would be slightly more inclined to double.

Double is sometimes necessary to prevent partner from surrendering a ruff and a sluff.

you expect too much fit from partner, The expected lenght for the 5 bid is around 7.8. Parter could easilly sacrifice on doubleton, specialy if he has slow values in clubs.

Double can give us a lot of MPs if partner has A and we happen to beat 400s, or why not? 550/650

TBH, I'm fairly confident 6 isn't making. But I think the grand could well make. And while midding may turn a small plus into a small minus, if either 6 or 7 is making, we gain a bunch by bidding. This is a tough choice.

Having checked the form of scoring, I see it's match-points, so I think I'll double and take my plus.

Here's the full deal (i think)

[hv=n=sxxhxxdajxckqjxxx&w=skj108xhaq10xxxdxcx&e=sqxxhkjxxxdca109xx&s=sa9xhdkq10xxxxxxcx]399|300|[/hv]

If you pass in tempo partner says he will bid 7. If you double or hitch pass, you get a 0. -100 (most likely) is worth about average. Top is +1090, which 3 people were in.
