West.....North....East.....South

Pass......1H........1S.......Pass

2D.........Pass......?

Holding the above hand, will you bid on as East or pass?

Note:- Sorry, the previous poll's question was phrased incorrectly.

Any comments on the rationale of your move will be appreciated.

Assuming standard, I would bid 3. The 2 is non-forcing (only a cuebid is forcing), but I am more than minimum for my overcall, and we probably have found our best fit.

The bidding went:

West.....North....East.....South

Pass......1H........1S.......Pass

2D.........Pass.....2H.......Pass

3C.........Pass.....3D......All Pass

Down -2 (AKQ8 and the 4th ruffed by the Q + KJ)

I was playing with a real Expert sitting West for the 2nd time and his comment was that I should pass and not bid on. His comment was that you should consider what your partner did not bid before you decide on your next move.

Here are his comments:

1. Partner is a passed hand.

2. Partner did not open 2D (weak), therefore he cannot have 6 diamonds.

3. Partner did not support your spades via 2S or a cue-bid raise of 2H.

4. Partner did not bid any number of NT's. With your 4 hearts and South's pass,

partner is probably sitting with 2-3 hearts which is not good.

5. Giving the above, partner must have clubs and diamonds. So, if you do not

have tolerance for diamonds, you should bid clubs.

So, giving the above reasoning, you should pass with this hand.

I think the above input is very valuable for one's thinking at the bridge table.

I hope that the above is constructive input.

Are you sure West was a real expert? He should probably have passed 1. He should probably have showed his weakness by bidding 3 over 2, assuming that 2 shows support.

OK, his bidding is not terrible but at least he shouldn't blame you for your completely normal bidding that led to a bad result, whether the bad result was because of lack of agreements, bad luck, or his fault.

1. YOur 1 was not successfull. The elder players won't be too surprised that a four card overcall in a balanced hand with a non solid suit does not always work.

When you pass they may have real trouble to reach a good contract at the right level.

2. I understand 2 Diamond. He does not want you to play in a 5-0 fit vul. But he still promised too much. He should pass.

3. I like your 2 and 3 despite the act this this is really pushy opposite a passed partner given the bidding so far.

He needs something like x,KJx,KQJxx,xxxx to make 3 NT an okay contract.

4. His comments are okay, but he still promised a much better hand with his bid.

Thanks Roland for your reply. My 1 overcall was more directed towards a good lead from partner should we defend rather than to play. Taking out the fact that he did bid right or wrong in this instance, his comments to me are still constructive for future considerations being an overcaller. Personally, I would have passed with his hand.

I really appreciate positive and constructive replies B)

You got a bad result because:

- Your partner stretched his hand in the bidding.

- Your hands mismatched.

- Your partner guessed wrong in the play.

Happens to all of us.

You:

- Played with a partner that considers himself to be better than you.

- Got an undeserved lecture.

Happens to all of us.

You could also wait a year, and ask the expert what he opens with:

A42

876432

A432

I can't guarantee you that he wont say 2, but it's worth a try.

That would probably be the ugliest preempt I've seen :) I've read about Marty Bergen, but at least there was a method to his madness.
