Indeed. Anything but 1NT is, as far as I am concerned, taking masterminding too far.

This comment from you. :)

Must be christmas time....

You don't understand what masterminding is :)

Masterminding is, in an extent, ok when you're strong. In this case you're no where strong enough to start taking unilateral decisions.

This is one of those questions that asks not what you should bid but asks what agreements you have or should have.

Obviously, if you only raise hearts when you have a "trouble reverse," then you bid either 1NT or 2, depending on style. If you have an agreement for very frequent three-card raises, then you raise. Maybe some factor I am missig dictates when you do and do not raise.

As to what style is best, I have my feelings, but this is simply based on the factor of with whom I play and their styles. I have not spent any time analyzing deals and auctions and competition and the like to state an educated opinion. I doubt many can do that either.

Yea, that is what I am trying to get at. I've so far basically been a "raise promises 4" kinda guy, just through osmosis, as that's what Flight A standard seems to be around here, but more and more it seems to be a winning approach to raise to 3 on many hand types.

As an addendum, 1NT-1 was actually a slightly above average score.

1NT.  WTP?

I agree with the second Ken. I've played that to raise on 3 you need a singleton, or that you always raise with 3-card support in a 4432 shape, and various in-between styles. I prefer an approach that allows me use my judgement on balanced hands. In that style, this would be an obvious raise.

I voted for 1NT, but I find 2 to be just as good. It's a choice between 1) advertising to your opponents that they should lead spades, or 2) having to make one more trick in a possible 4-3 fit. Pick your poison.

With an unknown/inexperienced partner I prefer 1NT. Game isn't very likely, and I don't want to give him a chance to jump to 4 with 11 points and 3-4-3-3.
