This problem seems like a non problem, indeed 7 of 8 people doubled at a party last night, a seemingly normal action, but a costly one. +200 against 620.

Is this result that surprising? We would all have bid 4 had partner passed. Sure this is a likely plus, but is it enough to forego the likely game we have?

PS I doubled too

I can easily imagine ten tricks in 4.

I can't be sure what tricks I am taking against 4.

This suggests bidding 4 to me. Certainly against anyone decent who was happy to bid 4 I would be bidding 4. Against a weaker player double might be more attractive but sometimes they have their bid too.

What does this mean and why does it suggest bidding 4H? I think it is very rare to know exactly which tricks you are going to take. On this hand you will probably take at least one trick in each suit, there is a good chance that you can take two club tricks and if partner has short clubs then you might take quite a few more.

I guess that partner is more likely to have short diamonds and rho has the short clubs, so I agree with Wayne that it is far from clear where to get our tricks from.

I had doubled without a second thought, but now I think that 4 Heart is right when you are facing a sane partner.
