Sitting south in 3rd hand you pick up

Partner passes, RHO thinks hard before passing as well.

2 would be artificial, forcing to game, so that's no option. Partner will expect you to preempt aggressively as far as suit quality is concerned, but has never seen you preempt on the 3 level with 6 cards. So if you bid 3 you can expect to be raised if partner holds more or less any hand with 3 diamonds.

Bonus question: Does RHOs hesitation have an influence on your decision?

I have found useful to open 3rd hand with very minimum hands and on this I would open 1. I don't like pre-empting with a side 4-card major, even when partner passed at his first opportunity. Of course RHO's hesitation influences my bid.

This is a clear third seat 3D opening.

If partner has never seen you open on a 6-card suit before, now's the time to try it...

If partner actively objects, you probably need to discuss the pros & cons further before doing it again, and partnership harmony is quite important.

Probably they miss game now?

I'm not sure how you intend your comment. Do you bid 3D hoping to give LHO a difficult decision so that, if LHO happens to make a close winning call, you can call the director and claim they used UI?

One option.

An other less ugly sounding: LHO feels forced to pass, because

he thinks the winning call gets suggested.

With kind regards

Sorry for the non working symbols in the poll options. Seems I can't edit this :(

I should have noticed noone is using them in polls. And I might have guessed there is a reason ...

nevermind, everyone who makes a poll does it at least once (I do it all the time).

I thinik 3 is clear, if my suit was hearts I would also bid 3, with the expection or a very strict partner I have once in a while with whoom I'd open weak 2 if avaible.

Thanks for all the replies.

I did bid 3 and partner was surprised but didn't object in any way. In fact it was fairly successful. When my partner turned up with 6 diamonds to AJ we ended in 6 doubled down 3 while the field was in 4+3 (and few in 6+1).

I didn't post this to get ammunition for partnership discussions, I just wanted to find out if the 3 bid was good + successful or just successful.

I'm not sure if I would have bid it without the hesitation, and I surely wouldn't have bit it, if I had 2 available. So you've given me some food for thought.
