Official BBF The Wire thread

Any other "The Wire" fans out here?

We started to watch it on DVD several weeks ago and immediately got hooked. For those who don't know about it, it is the best TV series ever. Not close. The plot is a bit too complicated for a weekly TV series though, so it didn't have as much success right away on TV as it deserved (I think it's doing extremely well on DVD).

Right now it's a bit of a surreal experience. We are at season 5, where things are getting more and more surreal. Meanwhile, the news these days are turning more and more into a The Wire script with the LA Times/Chicago Tribunue/Baltimore Sun bankruptcy, and the Blagojevich arrest today...

George Pelecanos, who wrote the script for 7+ episodes of "The Wire", will discuss his work and his latest crime noir "The Turnaround" at the Central Library in Arlington, Virginia on January 26th at 7:00 PM. Esquire magazine calls Pelecanos "the poet laureate of the D.C. crime world."

I just finished watching episode 8 of the first season. This is one excellent program.

I wish the tuning of my ear to the "blingo" was a bit sharper but since I am watching the french sub-titled torrents, I read them when I don't catch the entire meaning....altho sometimes the translation is a bit off when I do know what they said...lol

Looks like I will be up for the entire series :D

My wife and I went to the Arlington library last night to hear George Pelecanos talk about his writing. This guy is real and he knows DC. The most interesting thing about The Wire so far for me is it's strange combination of toughness, alienation and humanism (caring for others). After listening to Pelecanos for an hour, I can see where a lot of that comes from. Not that it comes mainly from him or that we're talking about a new-age sensitive crime writing guy here. He's definitely old school, for his age, but also incredibly attuned to the world he lives in and empathetic with its inhabitants, on both sides of the line that divide "us" from "others". His new book, The Turnaround, sounds interesting. DC has been turning itself around for some time now. I am curious to see what other types of turnarounds Mr. P. has decided to write about. He mentioned that this is his most autobiographical work to date.

By the way, the library auditorium was packed.

p.s. to non fans - The Wire is set in Baltimore, not DC. But the two cities are practically neighbors.

I agree. The Wire is by far the best show in the history of TV. It is like a novel in the in depth development of characters, but still includes the entertainment and humor of a TV show.

There are so many good characters and good scenes and good lines in The Wire.

My wife and I just finished watching episode 11 of season 1.

Yes, it's an amazing show for all the reasons other posters have mentioned and there's no way I'm not watching it to the end. But after I watch this show I often feel like I've been hit by a truck. It's not like I don't see it coming or that the characters in the show don't see it coming either. Still, it gets me every time. I'm such a jerk.

Best show ever!

I recommend subtitles for non-native English speakers. And for some native ones.

I wasn't as excited with season 1, my favorite is season 4. I'm a teacher, btw.

I meant season 5. I wasn't as excited by season 5. I don't want to spoil anyone by discussing, though.

Drugs are definitely a big problem, not just "out there" either. I don't think drugs are the real problem though. I think the real problem is that people aren't paying attention to what's going on in their families, schools, neighborhoods and cities ... not to mention their own lives. This is why McNulty, in addition to being a very charming, courageous guy is also an asshole. He knows this though so we can easily forgive him and others (ahem) with similar imperfections.

I think that I started out season 1 viewing McNulty as a tragic character. He wants to be good at his job, he wants to capture bad guys, but he's fettered by his superiors. (in white so those that haven't seen S5 aren't spoiled)

I don't know if I can easily forgive him for the thing with the homeless guys. He didn't kill them, but he DID kidnap one guy. Plus, the area he took him to could STILL get Baltimore/DC news, it was like he was asking to be caught.

I think that my favorite characters from season 1 were Omar and Bubbles. They remained my favorite. I did start sympathizing with Prez, as he became a teacher, but he's also pretty sad.
