I bid 5 clubs, then I bid 6!d, I think a simple 5 diamonds would suffice how would you bid this?

I have spades and diamonds and a pretty good hand so after 4C rolls around to me I bid 4D. Having already bid spades I take this to show spades and diamonds and a pretty good hand. Exactly how many cards in which suit and just how good I don't know but partner will probably do something sensible. I don't particularly like a double here although it is possible that 4C doubled is the right place to play this. If X is intended as "I have values but don't know what to do" partner may well decide he doesn't know what to do either and pass. Certainly a double should envision a possible pass. Might be right, but I think 4D followed by 5D from N sounds right. Possibly N should bid 4H over 4D which presumably suggest some spades and offers a choice (selecting the right game takes precedence over slam tries). But that's risky and just raising 4D to 5D is simple. (The S in SAYC is for simple, right? :) )

Incidentally, although SAYC always comes in for criticism I am not so sure this hand has anything to do with that system, or any natural system.

If I am N I probably bid 5D over 4D. If so, when I get the lead I am playing the Q of diamonds from my hand and running it. If it loses to the K I am running another diamond.

So now I see Han's advice. OK, maybe so. But I don't see my hand as being all that good. Partner has a decent hand, enough to bid 5D I think, and still I would not want to stake my life on 11 tricks.

I guess partner didn't pin J.

5 is an overbid but partner could tell you had primary diamond support, so signing off in 5 is plausible. However, she had a good hand. Now, if you had your bid - say K as well ....
