Elianna
I heard this in a song, and I was wondering what it meant. I tried googling it, and I couldn't find it. My guess from what I found is that it should mean something hollow (and so a bad connotation) but the song is pretty excited about having a wooden wedding. I don't know when the song was written. Likely somewhere between 1910-1940 (as the singer's tagline is songs from the 10's, 20's, and 30's).
onoway
I don't know if this is connected but I found this dated 1925http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0015921/plotsummary
Elianna
Yea, I saw that too, but I didn't think that it answered my question. From the description of the movie, the song doesn't fit it. Plus, that was from 1925, and thus did not HAVE songs in it.
Elianna
Adam suggested that it meant the fifth wedding anniversary. But that didn't seem to fit, because the song seemed to relate to an actual WEDDING, not an anniversary of a wedding. Maybe I need to listen to it, but I don't think that I can write the lyrics because I bet that they are copywrited.
Hanoi5
What's the name of the song?
kenberg
Here is a song, maybe the same one you heard.http://irishlyrics.homestead.com/files/cla...den_wedding.txtI get the idea that the song envisions a wedding where, presumably for economic reasons, guests are to bring presents made of wood. here is part: Now the first one to get there was Tim O’Hoolihan, he brought for a present a Japanese fanthen came Maloney just as neat as a pinhe brought a cradle for to rock the baby in O’Brien brought a sawhorse handsomely engravedO’Toole brought a cord of wood for which he didn’t payMurphy brought the clothespins and Ryan brought a broomand it looked as though a lumberyard exploded in the room So perhaps a wedding blessed by joy but with little money. Although as the song continues things get a bit out of hand!
Elianna
What's the name of the song? "Wooden Wedding" I've heard it sung by Janet Klein. And it doesn't seem to be the same one that Ken posted.
kenberg
Probably not. Maybe mine would be sung by Janey O'Kleinahan.
Elianna
Oh, that it's a different ethnicity doesn't stop JK, it's that she doesn't usually do folk-songy type songs. Neither does gender. Also, those lyrics don't appear in the song. :(
Al_U_Card
Well, isn't Ireland notoriously short on forests? Woodworking would be considered a classy and rare artform so maybe it refers to getting gifts made of wood as they are rare and valued? y66
I think Adam is right. Some renewals of vows are quite wedding like.
