maggieb
Give me the ♠K and I would consider this a minimum 3♠ bid.
jdonn
With this spade suit given you would need quite a strong hand. If you change the hand to AJTxxxxxAxxAx Then you are pretty close, although most wouldn't bid without a little more. If you further change that to AJTxxxxxxAxAx Then it's a minimum 3♠ bid for me. So obviously you can't say "13 points" is minimum or something since the hand with 13 you gave is not even close to a bid.
maggieb
Josh, I am in the category of "most others" who would not consider overcalling 3♠ on the first hand you gave. However, opposite a passed hand, I don't think it's close. Do you view having ♦Axx as a bonus? I would think that passing and bidding 4♠ over a balancing double is a much better way of tackling the hand.

How do I get a debate when I say most wouldn't bid :) I would not bid on that hand, so if your only debate is I'm not passing emphatically enough then oops? And yes Axx is a bonus, it guarantees shortness in partner's hand (or three cards in which case they probably can't even lead the suit.) It's better than Ax really since that leaves you open to possible overruffs.
P_Marlowe
Given that partner is a passed hand, making game ourside unlikely and that the 3D bid became wide ranging, 3S is nuts. For me the suit quality would be to bad, even if the abovestatments were false. With kind regardsMarlowe
whereagles
Pard is a passed hand and we've got diamond length. To bid here is, in my opinion, totally misjudged. I would require something like an upgrade of spades to KJT to bid. If KJ is all I have... I'll be in a quandry.
effervesce
Bid 3♠ if you want to go for a telephone number. Even if 3♠ is making, partner will raise 3♠ on quite a few hands like Kxx Kxx xx Kxxxx
