Ist rule of balancing: don't hang partner

If we knew he had diamonds, I would bid 4, but this is not a hand to play 4 on a 4-4 fit when he has rounded suits

Why don't we bid 3? Surely this is pass/correct. That way at least partner can bid 4m when lefty bids 3 now, as he surely will, given that they rate to have 9 or 10 spades. (I don't think partner should be balancing with significant spade length).

I think maybe the best reason not to do this is that they could easily be wrapping 4 and we're about to push them there.

It's extremely easy to imagine. You bid over 2 r/w with xx QJT9xxx xx xx?

Maybe so. I will concede that its possible for me to have hearts only.

Anyway, I found a 4 call (I hope anyone isn't thinking 4 isn't p/c) .

Pard had: JTx AQ9xx x QJxx. In spite of the wastage, 4 was making, but the opps took the par save to 4 x'd.

Is anyone raising 3 to 4? If thats the case, isn't a direct 4 better? Its very possible pard has three spades here, we are vul and its IMPs, so I expect a pretty good hand across.
