NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2012

PAGE 657

(b) APPLICABILITY TO UNITED STATES CITIZENS AND LAWFUL RESIDENT ALIENS.—

(1) UNITED STATES CITIZENS.—The requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to citizens of the United States.

(2) LAWFUL RESIDENT ALIENS.—The requirement to detain a person in military custody under this section does not extend to a lawful resident alien of the United States on the basis of conduct taking place within the United States, except to the extent permitted by the Constitution of the United States.

So the executive is not required to hold citizens or lawful aliens indefinitely without trial, but can choose to do so: Seems to demand a challenge in court. And that brings to mind the fact that one of the republican presidential debaters proposes to remove judges who defend the US Constitution too vigorously.

Glenn Greenwald:

The only provision from which U.S. citizens are exempted here is the “requirement” of military detention. For foreign nationals accused of being members of Al Qaeda, military detention is mandatory; for U.S. citizens, it is optional. This section does not exempt U.S citizens from the presidential power of military detention: only from the requirement of military detention.

As Greenwald pointed out, if the Executive branch can authorize the killing of an American citizen without trial(anwar awlaki), then it surely can imprison indefinately without trial.

Perhaps the supreme court will find this permissible under the Perpetual War clause.

Manuel Jalón Corominas, inventor of the mop.

Un día estando en un bar de Zaragoza un amigo le dijo: Jalón, no te compliques la vida con los aviones, ¿por qué no haces algo útil, por ejemplo, algo para que esa señora que está ahí de rodillas friegue de pie?

the translation would be: One day while he was hanigng out with friends one told him: Jalon, why do you complicate your life with planes?, why don´t you do something useful like helping that women there cleaning on her knees?

Are you serious about this?

I had always figured that the mop was one of those timeless things, dating back to Egypt or some such

Further investigation seems to provide that "mop" is not the same as "fregona" (spannish and latin american term), the cone to dry the mop by preshing seems to be the key feature that makes "fregona" different. In the english wikipedia mop´s entry has nothing to do with spannish "fregona" entry (Except for a photo). And the english one says something about a patent from the 19th century as the origin.

North Korea cites mysterious glow just before Kim death

North Korea says a fierce snowstorm paused and the sky began glowing red above sacred Mount Paektu just minutes before leader Kim Jong Il's death.

State media say the ice on volcanic Lake Chon at the mountain in the far north cracked with a load roar.

This was witnessed by thousands.

Some interesting bits appear in

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheeta

Probably you have to be my age or so to really appreciate Cheetah. I went to all of the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies, I totally rejected Weismullerr's replacement in later movies. I was basically unreachable by outside events when reading the novels.

One of the Tarzan movies involved a man-eating plant. I kept a good distance away from all shrubbery for quite a while after that.

My Dead Friends

by Marie Howe

I have begun,

when I'm weary and can't decide an answer to a bewildering question

to ask my dead friends for their opinion

and the answer is often immediate and clear.

Should I take the job? Move to the city? Should I try to conceive a child

in my middle age?

They stand in unison shaking their heads and smiling—whatever leads

to joy, they always answer,

to more life and less worry. I look into the vase where Billy's ashes were —

it's green in there, a green vase,

and I ask Billy if I should return the difficult phone call, and he says, yes.

Billy's already gone through the frightening door,

whatever he says I'll do.
