inquiry
This hand is not as good as it looks. The spot cards are not encouraging, partner is a passed hand, and if they have the ♣A and ♥K they rate to be behind me. I guess after long study, at imps, I would decide the hand probably should be passed, but after taking the long study to reach that conclusion, I would feel obligated to bid... because otherwise I put too much ethical pressure on partner and he will not be able to reopen due to my hesitation. So if I do bid, I would double, and pull 4♦ to 4♥. Dbl is the only way to get to play 3♠x or 3NT, when those contracts are right. At matchpoints I would just double. Easy pass More difficult if partner were not a passed hand... If I double, I am pickled after partner's 4D response.4H significantly overstates my heart suit. Free
Double. As Ben said, only way to play 3♠* or 3NT when it's right. I like my hand. If p bids 4♦ I think I'll pass...
mishovnbg
dbl, not enough offensive for 4♣: ♣+♥; on 4♦ form partner - 4♥ scrambling. Misho
mpefritz
After using my ten seconds to evaluate my hand a la Ben, pass. Not only are my honors in a bad position, my passed-hand partner's spade honors are also. fritz
luis
Automatic pass.Passed pd + Not vulnerable = Not worth risking a double. I'd double if VUL even if pd is a passed hand. I'd double if pd is not a passed hand no matter the vulnerability.
Fluffy
Pass: I don´t have the structure and on my style I don´t have any extra strenght, (Even I´m lackick 1 HCP), to double, and other options seem so unreasonable to me, so I really beleive I would be able to pass quick enough so my partner isn´t on an ethic problem.... but I was slept and hesitated too much I think I can switch to double. My teacher Radoslav Videnliev had a nice saying: "If you are afraid of wolves, don't go to forest for mushrooms" ;) -------- When you are in situation where getting info is impossible you must play on statistics. It means in example to bid, because your p have around 8 hcp and fit and 4 level is safe. Anoter rule is to play for 2 TH in p after preempt from opps. Finally 5 losers hand with 15 good hcp is 2 zone of opening and worth normally nonjumping reverse is hand with which if I pass I will lose my little remain selfrespect of courage man :) . Misho Your teacher is right and i wish i could push this into some players head (one in particular) but i am sure Luis know that. when i read this qeustion my answer was to double, later when i read what other ppl said i decided not to post here because i dont know if im right and if Luis pass i wouldnt advise otherwise unless im confident enough with my answer and im far from it here.
