pclayton
Matchpoints, white / red 2♦ on your right, alerted as 11-15, 5+ diamonds. You pass with ♠Axxx ♥QJxx ♦KQxx ♣x LHO responds 2♥ (forcing and natural). Pard comes in with 2♠ and RHO raises to 3♥. Your call?
NickRW
Not sure, but I fancy 4♠. Nick
kfay
Seems like there's 2 strategies I can adopt. Bid 3♠ now and hope to saw them off in 4♥, or bid 4♠. I think it's pretty likely that 4♠ will make, though, so I'll just bid that.
helene_t
Phil, when do you ever learn to trust the vulnerable opponents? 3♠.
ArtK78
My first thought was to bid 3NT and avoid diamond ruffs, as partner must have club cards on this auction. However, the danger in the heart suit is real, and I have reconsidered. I go back to the obvious 4♠ call.
gwnn
Easy 4♠ bid, even opposite some joke overcalls like Kxxxxx x Jx QJxx game is OK, the two wasted QJ's notwithstanding.
jdonn
4♠. None of us know why it will be right, it just will be. Usually.
mikeh
4♠... this may well be making unless they have diamond ruffs coming, and find them... heart out to lho, diamond back and a club entry to rho for the second ruff... odds are against that layout. Besides, I surely do NOT want to defend 4♥, but would be okay spanking 5♥
skjaeran
I'd most probably just raise to 4♠, but I could see myself bidding 4♥ on the way with this hand.

I think it would be an error to bid 4♥. Partner is probably light given the vul and auction, so the chances of us finding a slam or something pale in comparison to the chances they would benefit by doubling a 4♥ bid. effervesce
KQxx in diamonds is a warning sign for me. It looks like diamond lead, diamond ruff, heart lead, diamond ruff. I'm bidding 3♠. If LHO does not have a diamond singleton, but partner instead, then you have diamond tricks coming in defense, which are wasted in a spade contract. MFA
Incredible to me that so many are willing to signoff in 3♠. I thought this was a 4♠/cuebid-raise to 4♠ decision. I'm "just" bidding 4♠, since my values are very soft and I need a perfecto for slam (Kxxxxx, x, Ax, Axxx).
keylime
4♠ with me. Someone's farting around.

If LHO does not have a diamond singleton, but partner instead, then you have diamond tricks coming in defense, which are wasted in a spade contract.I would give long odds against a diamond lead.. I agree with the fear of ruffs, but not at trick 2... think about it: I would guess a diamond lead would be the 3rd choice of opening lead. One of the reasons tbat most winning bridge players bid aggressively is that defence, and particularly the opening lead, is difficult. It is losing bridge to firstly imagine that a losing layout exists and then, to compound the problem, expect double-dummy defence in what amounts to a blind guess. Oops you're correct-for some reason I thought LHO would be leading.Leading from Axxxx(x) would be very unlikely. It's closer now, but I think 3♠ is still enough at MP.
