Matchpointitis

Completely agree with the pass. If partner can't bid it's hard to see how we can make anything since none of the spots in our long suit are going to take any tricks. If we bid, we have no hope of describing our hand to partner, so we will be forced to bid 3NT to end the auction next time, amounting to the same thing as just bidding 3NT immediately.

Bidding 3 now seems totally obvious.

I think 3 Heart is mandatory, but more for the reason that 3 NT is always wrong:

If pd has solid diamonds and side tricks, we belong in slam. And if his diamonds are not solid, f.E. AQx,x, AQJTxxxx;Kx, we belong in 5 or 6 Diamond too, because 3 NT will fail.

I think I underestimated the probability of slam originally, and thinking about it more, 3 must be right.

But I still think penalty passing with this hand is awful, I would have bid 2N.

So you don't want to make a penalty pass that's probably going to go for 300 on average, but you don't think this hand is worth a game force?

That doesn't make sense to me.

3NT sounds like a severe case of matchpointitis!

Partner has:

x Jx AKQ10xxx KQx

so 3 will get you to the good 6 if you keep going.

Is this a minimum for partner's bid or just about right?
