Partner's got at least 5 points outside diamonds. Even if it's Q, Q, J, the 3 level should be safe. Plus, partner isn't 5332, so I dont' think I'm in huge danger of a black suit ruff.

I'm never sure what to bid in these situations, though. Maybe 2NT, showing my balanced hand?

I think on balance the NT will play better from pard's side. I'd rather the lead go into the A-T, or A-9's.

3 for me.

bid 3diamonds--pard does not have 4 spades also 4 clubs-probably 1/2/3 hts

so if pard is min min he will pass with say1/2 hts if he did not rebid n/t over 1 ht

he may now bid 3n/t,and scrable 9 tricks

A couple of thoughts follow, although they would probably be considered Adv/Exp. So, they are hidden because people seem to freak out if such stuff is not hidden.

I have the South hand, and North started the bidding. Hence, I am a passed hand. That limits my possible holdings.

Second, partner was in third seat. He might have opened 2 with a fairly rich hand because I have passed already, so 1...2 is a fairly sound start to the auction.

Therefore, I think I am good enough for a delayed fit-jump. I am real close to an opening bid as it is, but I have started conservatively (maybe "conservatively" means "not insanely").

My bid, therefore, is 3. I'm willing to commit to 3NT, 4, or 4 with this hand in this sequence, so I might as well show a good 5-card heart suit with diamond support and a concentration of values in the red suits.

I'd hide those thoughts too. And not because they aren't suitable for the BI's either :(

To some extent, choice of bid depends a lot on style:

Is there any chance that partner would rebid 2 on a 5 card suit?

How often would partner raise hearts with 3 card support?

In most of my partnerships, North's 2 rebid would (essentially) promise 6 diamonds and would tend to deny three hearts.

Opposite said partner, I will happily bid 3, hoping to hear either 3N or 3
