which card, and why?

Recommended Posts

You are on defence against 1NT. you play udca, standard honor leads. (not up for debate here, but feel free to mention if you prefer rusinow or whatnot).

auction:

P - (P) - 1 - (1NT); all pass

p puts down the K.

q1. what is your preferred meaning for each card (T,9,2) on this lead (playing udca)?

q2. which signal would you give here?

Pure attitude situation here unless the lead of the King is conventional (some play it asks for an unblock or count, much like the standard lead of the Ace against NT).

Absent any special agreement, I give attitude. But the play of the 10 promises the 9.

I play the 10.

Standard K is from KQ10 or KQJ and not asking for unblock.

On K you should play Attitude.

2 = i like the lead.

10 = i don't like the lead and i can afford droping the 10 (usually means i got the 9).

9 = not an option here. (i would play the 9 with 98x to discourage)

The question weather i like to encourage the lead isn't simple here.

By encouraging the lead i discourage the "Obvious shift" suit. If you have specific obvious shift rules you know exactly which suit it is, if you dont you have to think and hope partner think on the same waves.

Here the normal rules (from the book by granoveters) says the the suit is the obvious shift since its a suit Iv bid, this seems illogical seeing the dummy and knowing declarer have a stopper in the suit, yet playing these rules you must follow it.

If you don't have rules, Id could guess are the obvious shift suit and hope partner guess the same.

Now finally to the card i play. If is the Obvious shift i would play the 2 to encouraging, if are the obvious shift id play the 10 to discourage.

I prefer to have the rules even if sometimes they aren't perfect.

UDCA any card except the 9 is fine because partner has KQJ for the lead so if he continues small, it would be just fine. If I am playing with an unknown, I'll go for the clear 10. The nine accomplishes nothing and as a signal it is vague, even misleading when it denies 109x.
