No-one plays this as a 'gotcha' double... this shows ownership of the hand, and partner is expected to pass with balanced hands and to bid with lots of shape and to guess well with hands that are in between.

Well, unless you stand up, place your foot on your chair for leverage, and slam down the red card. :P

That reminds me of when I first started playing and I went to my first youth championships having only played for a few months. I was lucky enough to be on a team with some experienced players and was partnering one of them for a round. We used written bidding for that comp and there was some long bidding sequence where I was waiting to double for penalty. I pressed so hard with my pen that it was very obvious to all it was a penalty double (even though the auction said so also), (we are in a room with 32 tables playing), partner got up from his chair, stood on the chair, and said loudly "I hear you partner" to much laughter.
