microcap
[hv=d=s&v=n&s=sq543had6ck976543]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] you are dealt this first hand. Do you open, and if so , what and why? It's early in the match and you don't know much about opponents.

ArtK78
First, I think that a 1♣ opening on these cards is sick. It may work, but it is still sick. I am contrained by system not to open 3♣ on these cards. Even if I were not, I don't think it is a good idea. Your club suit is not good, and your hand is very playable in spades. Furthermore, you have defense - The ♥A, the ♣K. While this hand will play well opposit a fit, it does not play well without one. So opening 3♣ could easily turn out badly. I would pass in first seat. dake50
Playing a M>m canape, I open 1S with 4+S even also 5-6c minor. This is extreme: 7xC but I don't intend to insist clubs without tolerance from partner.
han
I can imagine opening a 9-count hand with 4117 shape, for example with K109x x x AQ10xxxx I would not be able to pass. With this hand however I have no such problems, I pass and consider it clear.
rogerclee
Pass, opening this hand is a distortion to me. I'm happy to come in later.
mikeh
pass ... no alternative. Opening hangs partner (unless you are playing ultra light opening methods)
pclayton
The hardest bid in bridge is pass, but I think that is the best solution.
ASkolnick
Depends the purpose: 1♣ If I am just trying to set the tone2♣ If I play precision, I think you are pretty safe.Pass If I want to bid normally.3♣ If I play that style of preempts, but I think the outside strength and the 4 card major are big negatives. jdonn
Anything but pass seems really weird to me.
Edmunte1
Easy pass for me, as long as passing and bidding afterwards is much closer in comunicating an usefull message to partner than opening.
