Yet another slam hand

At our table we coasted fairly comfortably to 6S when my partner (East) took a slightly eccentric view and showed the Spades before the Diamonds. I have no doubt that a policy of bidding the final trump suit early in the auction is a benefit to finding slams. Unfortunately you don't have the luxury of knowing that suit without seeing through the backs of partner's cards. So our auction, not that it is a recommended model, went

S......W......N......E

1C...1H.....P......1S

P.....2C(1)..P......3D

P.....3S.....P......4D

P.....6S.....P.......P

P

(1) forcing noise

My concern was how to get to slam if East bids Diamonds before Spades. This happened at the other table, with slightly different intervention by opps.

S......W......N......E

P.....1H.....P......2D

3C....X(1).P......3S

P.....3N.....P......4C

P.....4H.....P......6D

P......P......P

(1) Described as Strong NT (15+) - E/W playing weak 1N and 4 card Majors

I am not sure how confident East was that 6D was a good spot at the time of bidding it.

Which is the better slam? A 3-3 Diamond break is unlikely (happens to work). South's bidding arguably suggests working finesses where required, perhaps more so at my table than at the other. Given a working Spade finesse you can stand a 4-2 Diamond break.

Anyway, just some random thoughts. I only post it because if my partner had come up with 2D instead of 1S I think we may well stop short of slam.

Hi,

a possible auction, the bids upto 3NT as on the other table

(Pass) - 1H ..... - (Pass) - 2D

(3C) .. - X ....... - (Pass) - 3S

(Pass) - 3NT .... - (Pass) - 4S (1)

(Pass) - 4NT (2) - (Pass) - 5D (3)

(Pass) - 5H . (4) - (Pass) - 6D (5)

(Pass) - 6S . (6)

(1) showes 6-5

(2) RKCB for spades

having the Ace in both out side suits,

there wont be a looser out side diamonds

and spades

(3) 1KC

(4) Queen ask

(5) Queen + King of diamonds

(6) ...

With kind regards

Marlowe
