Suppose I posted a poll like this:

532 643 KQ7 K642

Partner opens 1. RHO bids 4. What call do you make?

How many votes do you think there would be for any action other than pass? If you think there would be any at all, remove the king of clubs from the hand above and then tell me how many votes you think there would be for any action other than pass.

Yet in both cases, it is right to bid 5 with the original poster's hand (in the former case because it will make, in the latter case because 4 will probably make). I would not go so far as to say that if you pass out 4 you are "flat out owned", because I am not sure I know what the phrase means. I would, however, go so far as to say that the question is perhaps not as clear as pclayton thinks.

Phil passed, the thread can be closed now.

I reopen the thread by bidding 5. No guarantee of success, but I prefer the active risk rather than the passive one. Hope I have understanding team-mates if I come back with -1100.

I think this is an interesting question:

Would your answer be different if your long suit was clubs?

Why or why not?

Yes, I think mine would be. There are a lot of hands where partner would have bid 5H over 4S, safe in the knowledge that we have five, but would not have bid 5C opposite a 1C opening with the same hand with his hearts and clubs reversed.

This doesn't have to be enough to tip the balance; But, for me, I think it would be.

I would bid 5's and I would bid 5 if the club and heart suits were switched. But bidding is not my strong suit (neither is declarer play or defense for that matter).

What is the range for a 4 spade bid here? How strong can it be? How weak can it be without partner doubling.

Now for something completely different....

I would've opened 4. If I played something like namyats I would show a good 4 bid.

Assuming the auction goes 4-(4) I feel fairly comfortable leaving the decision to partner here. I don't have so much defense that I feel compelled to double if 4 passes to me.

Under the given conditions where I opened 1 and I am red/white, I would pass 4. Obviously this can sometimes be quite bad, but I suspect that most of the time 5 is failing and the vulnerability makes it unlikely to be a good sacrifice. At equal colors I would bid 5. If I held clubs, I would bid 5 for the reason MickyB suggests.
