You should play the lowest ♥, discouraging.

Since the Jack wins, it will be clear for partner that you don't have anything in ♦, so you will give ♦8, showing an even number.

At the table I was sitting the other side; ie i was the person holding C AKXXX and thought i was clever on xing their stayman. When the x by me backfied, of course I thought there was a chance the contract could be defeated

 

My thoughts: sitting behind the dummy

 

I would , acting on " when attitude is irrelevant ; count is virtually irrelevant, SUIT preference comes in play

 

1. A highest heart ; I think partner is trying to get a ruff

 

2. A highest D; again signalling a entry in spade again I can not cover over dummy's high D

 

Along the same line if my partersnhip happens to play bergen raise after 1H 3D ( my sublimit raise) and the oppo declares 4S to my LEFT. when partner opens up Heart Ace and dummy tables XX . I behind the dummy holding 9 7 5 2 , there are many ways to follow the suit while communicating the suit prefence

 

obviously the 5 is : use your judgement

 

can the obviously high carry some message and 1st low carries another ?
