Bid Like Zia, Part 3: 1, then 1 over a red suit response?!

1 then 3 for me, also. Certainly wouldn't complain if partner opened 1NT.

IMO this hand is too strong for 1NT.

I kind of like 1C then 2NT, but hard to be too critical of 1C-3C which is surely the "textbook" way to bid this hand.

Agreed, can't think of anything else to say.

I agree also, but I do have something to say (of course).

My initial reaction was, "1, and then decide whether to bid 2NT or 3 depending on the developments."

Since this is MP, wont the field be in 1C - 3C?

So isnt that the bidding you want to follow?

Also, I want pard to declare, with the heart, and perhaps second Dime stoppers.

If pard has Qxx in Dimes, and Kxx in hearts, along with a few Clubs, he should declare.

Right on. Anyone that calls this a balanced 15-17 needs a remedial lesson in basic hand evaluation.

1 over 1

Yay!

You are aware he specified "playing transfer responses", right?

Damn. I missed that. I was having such a nice Friday, too.

This hand is from a Challenge the Champs bidding contest. I decided to use the "normal" 1 then 3 sequence for a zero (I was surprised by this score!). Partner has Qxx K9x Q9xxxx x.

Of the two pairs in the challenge, one plays strong club, so they had a huge system gain: 1-1; 2-2 to the top spot. Elahmady and Sadek was the other pair, playing a fairly natural system. He opened 1 and rebid 2! This got them to 3, the next best spot.

Kokish recommends opening 1NT (albeit with a question mark) with this hand in his BWS auction.

Definitely 1...3 for me. Opening 1NT on this hand seems quite bad. In addition to having too much playing strength, this hand is heavy on controls (easy to have game or slam opposite a mild fit; even x xxxx Kxxx xxxx is virtually cold for a game). And you don't even really have tenaces to protect -- if 3NT is the right contract it will likely play as well or better from partner's side.

1...2NT is better on values, but still has the risk of missing a fitting club game/slam or wrong siding a contract. I admit I'm never going to reach game opposite my example 3-count (barring a strong club system perhaps) but at least I'd like to get to game if we give partner an extra queen somewhere on top of that. Rebidding 3 should prompt a raise from four-card support and a side singleton, whereas rebidding 2NT will prompt a pass from a five-point hand without a long suit (since four-card support for opener's "could be three card" minor is not a huge bonus).
