double...always double troubles

Recommended Posts

I'll start the discussion with next hand:

Vxxx

Ax

xxx

xxxx

LHO opened with 1, your pd overcalls with 1, LHO bid natural 2, you PASS (I suppose), LHO bid 3 and your partner DOUBLE

what is your bidding?...why?...would be influenced by vulnerability?...could pd have AKxx,Kxxxxx,x,Ax?...but Axx,KVxxxx,x,AKx?

I'm asking about your style because we meet a lot of these kinds of situation:

1) (1)-1-(2)-P-(P)-DBL-(P)-?

2)(1)-1-(2)-P-(P)-DBL-(P)-?

Passing 2 is losing bridge imo, you have a perfect takeout Dbl (maybe light, but shape is perfect).

So you passed... Now you have a decision to make while you could've shown your hand already and let partner decide. 3 seems the obvious call, I don't see a reason to bid 4M, and no reason why partner should have 6 s. I'd rather give p a 4-5-1-3 distribution.

What's a 'V' ?

It's a Jack (Valet) if we are in France, and it's a Queen (Vrouw) if we are in the Netherlands. Whatever, I agree with Frances. Pass first, then 4.

If it's a queen, we are very close to a responsive double on our first turn.

Pass over 2.

Considering what rubbish my partner usually has for 1 this is not close for me at all. He will have a second chance if LHO passes.

3 over 3X.

The usual spade length for partner here is just 3. I'm not bidding Jxxx before Ax. Bidding game is much too rich for me (although 4 would land us in the right strain). I want partner to act aggressively with short diamonds.

If you give a luke-warm preference to 3, do you then expect him to raise with say

KQxx

KQxxxx

x

Ax

For all he knows, you could have a bust. Nothing so far has indicated that you have values. Pass over 2, 3 over his double. It doesn't sound encouraging, does it?

Hi Roland.

No, I don't expect him to raise with that, but it's quite close. Imo partner shouldn't assume that we are completely broke or he wouldn't be able to act very often in the first place.

Anyway I might still get lucky and write +140 with a bad split in either major.

Is it my turn now to assign a *random* hand to partner? :D B) :D

I completely agree with Michael's post. The partner won't play us for bust, as long as opps limited their hands (RHO made a simple raise, LHO didn't invite). Partner will play us for an average of 5hcp. The only good news for partner in our hand is the quality of our points, but this is not enough for bidding more than 3
