    • Why did I pass an obvious 2H preempt?

In my opinion:

Pass is not forcing. We could have absolutely nothing here for our 2H bid. Partner should have a good hand for his 4H bid, but if he wanted to force he could bid 3S then 4H.

Anyway, I'm going to pass. The 5 level doesn't belong to me. If I had longer (or shorter) spades I'd be happier with a 5H bid but it's quite likely that we have 2 top spade losers, and it'd be optimistic to expect 11 top tricks after that.

Pass is nf, I bid 5 since either contract could easily be making.

And if that were the case, pard would have done something over 4. Really, what do we have that makes 5 a good bet? I have one card and the 5th heart is nice, but I'll bet you pard has at 5 or more hearts a majority of the time, so its not that big of an asset.

Obvious that pass is NF.

So you want to defend 4 when partner can't double it and you think you have a 10 card heart fit?

So pard is supposed to double 4 when he might have four tricks?

All a 10 card fit gives us is comfort that 5 won't be a debacle.

Partner held:

Axx

AQJTxx

Kx

AJ

Declarer had a heart void, and 4 was making. 5 goes down one (losing a spade and one in each minor). Perhaps partner should have bid 5 here (or bid 3 earlier) but I thought this was still an interesting problem from my side of the table.

There is something very odd about the auction. LHO bid 2 nonforcing spades after my 2 call, and then 4 over my partner's 4 call (which was obviously bid to make).

The failure of my partner to cue bid doesn't mean he isn't bidding 4 on power. It just means he has no slam ambitions.

I don't think that my partner's pass over 4 is forcing, per se. But I cannot conceive of any hand with any cards at all on which I would pass out 4. This hand has an extra heart, so I will bid 5. If I had a non-heart honor card and a balanced hand I would double. If I had a flat zero count I would pass.
