han
I want to play in 4S if partner has 3 of them.
kenrexford
It depends. 1. Can partner have five hearts?2. What are our agreements/conventions? For example, assume that partner can have five hearts and we play a mice form of Puppet. This is good enough to force a vulnerable, IMP game. But, I want the right spot. So, I could bid 3♣ puppet, as long as partner bids 3NT with hearts or 3♥ with no 4-card or longer major. Then, if partner does bid 3♥, I can show five spades and three hearts by bidding 3♠ (or 3NT if 3♠ relays 3NT, which makes no sense opposite a 13-15 1NT). If I do not play that, then I'd probably transfer (if we use transfers) before bidding 3♦, if partner can bid 3♥ naturally. If 2♦ if GF stayman, then that seems obvious. I would intend to rebid spades if partner, for example, bids 2♥, allowing partner to rebid 3♥. Or, maybe he bids 3♥ himself. Sure, the usefulness of the spade suit is suspect if hearts are trump. But, the stiff is more probably more useful. So, I want hearts considered as much as I can.
pclayton
If I do not play that, then I'd probably transfer (if we use transfers) before bidding 3♦, if partner can bid 3♥ naturally. You better check with your pard about this. In my partnerships, 3♥shows a heart stopper (and denies a club stopper), and says nothing about heart length. It can show: Ax KQx AQxx xxxx. mikeh
♠AQJ10x♥Axx♦7xxx♣x Red, imps. Partner opens a 13-15 nt. Plan?If you want a specific bidding plan, and want to see if we choose the way you chose, you have to specify the methods in use. I have one partner who would commit this hand to spades. I have others who would allow partner to make the guess. I would never show diamonds myself, but I prefer 2 way stayman over this range of 1N, and if partner showed 5 diamonds, I'd get excited: there are a lot of hands on which 6♦ will have real play. If playing transfers, I'd offer a choice of games. Could work out very badly. Been there, done that.

Fine - I bid 4H, pard knows my shape and will correct if he doesn't have hearts.
