rbforster
4th seat favorable. Everyone playing 2/1. You consider bidding a 2♠ preempt over a 3rd seat 1♣. Partner will expect a "normal" 2♠ preempt, i.e. usually 6 cards and ~4-10. [hv=d=y&v=f&s=sqt8xxht8xxdxxcjx]133|100|Scoring: imps(P)-P-(1♣)-?[/hv]What do you see as the risks of this call, and what are the possible gains? How do you think the auction is likely to continue? At favourable vulnerability, occasionally, in a new partnership, I've pre-empted with a 3 card suit e.g. ♠ xxx ♥ AKQ ♦ xxx ♣ xxxxUsually, partner raises pre-emptively and the result is disastrous B)But it was almost worth it for 5 seconds of fame: when I cashed 3 tricks against an expert opponent's slam :)
OleBerg
With my usual partner, this is a wtp 2♠ (for me, not for my partner. ), but if partner expects 6 spades and 4-10, it's obviously insane. (Voted: Risky, but likely to cause problems.)
han
Would consider a joke 1S, not 2S.
Sambolino
i don't have a problem with 5 spades or lack of hcps but with 4 card heart suit. we're pushing pard into wrong sacrifice over 4h
pclayton
What I find is that bids like 2♠ frequently randomize results. You'll go for a lot of -500's and -800's against their games, which kind of wash out. The problems come when LHO does have a serious stack and you go for some ridiculous number, or when declarer takes all of the two-way finesses through partner's hand. The occasional win a bid like this makes is when LHO has HJ9x and traps, and RHO can't reopen with Hxx. There you are scoring up a silly -200 or -250 against their 3N. The other win you can accomplish is some -1100's against their slams in 3 or 4♠'s. 1♠ is safer, but unless you want to go the partnership desk every tournament, its not a bid you should make.
