Hmm, it seems 4 ("Pick a major pard") is out of the question

Ok, really, we expect partner to have an opening hand (12+ pts) in order to double at level 1, a trick better (15+) for level 2, etc. so he is now 18+ (especially vulnerable). We don't stop , so 3NT is out of the question, but we contribute 3 controls, no wasted values in , why not try a game? We could have a weaker hand or softer values, no?

When else to go for a number if not vuln at IMPs? :D

I used to bid 4 on these hands, but I have been converted to a 3 bidder. I bid 4 on a similar, or perhaps worse, hand in real life and went for 800 not vulnerable. This lost 12 IMPs to 3 not doubled, -150.

OK, that was a sample of just one deal, but it is much easier to double a 4 level contract than a 3 level one.

Passing is a huge disaster, as 3X makes easily. Bidding 3NT is also pretty bad (opponents will take the first six tricks, and you will probably lose a seventh trick for -300). Forcing to game in partner's better major is likely two down, and there is a small chance of getting doubled as well.

At the table I bid 4 and after the high diamond lead, west switched to the spade jack (east signaled for spades by playing a high diamond to the first trick). At this point 4 makes on careful play, and I scored up +130. Letting 3 make would require more defensive errors.

Teammates bid P-P-2-X-3-all pass and scored up +110, so we won a few IMPs on the board.
