Etiquette Tip of the Day

:)

It was interesting to read elsewhere about the rudeness involved in bumping players--I've been bumped when I joined a table with no explanation given.  No big deal.  Life is too short to make mountains out of molehills.

It seems to me the most frequently abused aspect is to leave a hand during the play or after dummy comes down revealing an awful contract.

Perhaps many players simply DON't know what the guidelines are.  They see inappropriate behavior and mimic it later on.

My suggestion is to place one etiquette tip per day at the top of the NEWS box or elsewhere on the "Lobby Page" perhaps as a streamer.  New tips could be periodically rotated.  I don't think etiquette is going to just happen unless we actively encourage and promote it.

Hope this helps.

A fairly good idea, but it may not be that necessary. After all, the vast majority of players I have run across in the BBO are very polite indeed. You did make one point I want to highlight (your quote in yellow).

Question, when the declarer leaves the table when the dummy becomes revealed... how do you know if the he left on his own, or if the host booted him. Some one has just been rude... but the person who left may have done so involuntarily... which is why I suggest an alert system like what happens when someone gets disconnected if the host boots a player... but who knows it might already be implements (I have no idea if a host ever booted anyone at a table I played at or kibitized).

Normally I won't divulge disciplinary information at all in public, but I will say that we have barred many users recently for exactly this - leaving the table after an auction that seemed to go badly for one side and the leaving party using rude and abusive language towards his partner.

Let me emphasize that I have ZERO tolerance for this type of behavior and any users that I witness or have reliable information on will NOT be playing on BBO again.

The next version of the software I believe is going to include mentioning of when a user is kicked.  I'm not 100% on this however but from the sounds of things is a function we could really use.

Something else I'm going to take a look at the feasibility of is implementing a type of alert system in which a user can send a general alert with comment to the admins and if we receive multiple alerts about a particular user we can handle the situation more efficently.

I am a very strong believer in proper bridge etiquette and any deliberate rudeness I will be frowning upon.  I may even have to be a bit of a road cop to do it but I'll take the heat for that sort of thing if that's what it takes to ensure BBO remains a friendly place to play.

*sighs*

since this is in a suggestions for the software section, I thought I might provide one related to bumping / leaving the game:

Use an automated message to inform everyone at table when either a player leaves in the middle of a hand or when host boots someone.  This way everyone at table is aware of rude behaviour and who is really to blame!
